Library and streaming services outage

Since 04:00 GMT on Sunday morning, the primary Radb service has been exhibiting intermittent problems meeting acceptable service levels. This means that libraries, scrobble counts and the services associated with them (stats, radio stations etc) appear to be broken when you use Last.fm.

We’re working very hard to fix this as soon as possible, and we’ve had engineers on it throughout yesterday and last night, but we wanted to keep you posted here with what’s happened and what we know so far.

UPDATE (19/07/11 11:29):
We’ve re-enabled access to your library and chart service after analysing this morning’s traffic in a little more depth.

As we continue working on the fixing the underlying faults it may be that we have to switch them off again for short periods of time. In the meantime keep checking the status page for information about the service.

Thanks again for your patience.

All of our services here at Last fm are predicated around keeping track of your accumulated music plays – your scrobbles – and using statistical methods on the historical data to build awesome things.

Because scrobbles power everything dynamic and wonderful on the site, we need fast realtime access to the scrobbles and associated summary data ( library, charts, neighbourhoods, etc. ). And with milions of people scrobbling, and the size of the historical scrobbles set, doing this fast in realtime, while updating the same sets with new plays as fast as can be managed is a significant challenge. We have a custom, in memory database service that we designed and implemented to address these needs. It is called Radb. It is usually pretty awesome at answering these sorts of questions in a predictably constant time.

But since 4am on Sunday Radb has been failing. The reasons for this are unclear. Failing over to the redundant service providers helps a little, but not enough. The reasons for this are also unclear. We have engineers working flat out to diagnose this problem.

To remove as much stress as we can from the database service layer, we have additionally disabled most of our radio, library and recommendation services, temporarily. We have also stopped accepting new scrobbles for the meantime, for a similar reason. Scrobbling clients will detect this state and will cache your scrobbles until the submission service is reactivated, so no need to panic about scrobbles being lost.

Keep an eye on the status page, and the appropriate forum posts. We’ll update with more information and estimates as we have them.

It happens. last.fm has one of the most reliable and stable servers I’ve used, and problems like this are rare. As long as it stays that way, I don’t think this will be too much of a problem.

This is probably the first time I’ve experienced/noticed Last.fm being down since I signed up, which was in 2009. It has probably been down before, but like I said: never noticed it. I can’t say I’m upset over this, though. If I do lose my scrobbles, so be it. :) Good luck with fixing it!

    I have been a member since 2004.
When they changed from audio scrobbler to last.fm there were a few hiccups. They got it sorted pretty quick though.

I’ve never really seen any big issues, but with a larger set of data coming in, it’s no surprise Radb is overloaded.

    A fix will come.
    Have faith.

    Peace

    ! with a capital eek!
Yes, its irritating when things dont run smoothly, but I’ve been signed up since 2005 [ I hadnt realised it was such a long time ago! ] and its only occasionally that the system has failed.
Yes, this fail is probably the most dramatic I’ve experienced, but these things happen.
And Yes, I subscribe and so have ‘lost’ a day that I’ve paid for, but since I intend to continue subscribing, what difference will giving me back these lost days make?
If I stop subscribing it’ll mean that I REALLY wont care about LastFM any longer, so do I think that my mind might be changed by a few ‘free’ days extra.
    Dont think so.

On the other hand , if I only subscribed for a short period it would be a happy warm feeling if I got a goodie of extra make up days from LastFm.

Suck it up and put on your big boy pants. You didn’t lose a month of service. You didn’t lose 3 months of service. The “fair” thing would be to prorate subscribers the amount of days the service has been down. If it takes a week, guess what? You should get a week free.

You’re not out anything but a few cents (or pence or whatever currency you used). Take a deep breath everyone, relax, and untwisted your knickers.

Libre.fm is the answer to your problem. The open source model often builds higher quality, more secure, more easily integrated software, and the main reasoning behind the foundation of Libre.fm was to provide a service similar to last.fm that respects the privacy of its users and their information. As such, Libre.fm does not log users’ IP addresses, allows users to decide if their listening habits are to be made public or not, and does not claim ownership on users’ data. All software has source code. Open source software grants every user access to that code. Freedom means choice. Choice means power.

Hey everyone. Reposting the update to the blog post above, for those who might have missed it:

    UPDATE (19/07/11 10:50):
After staying relatively stable overnight we encountered more problems with Radb this morning. We’ve chosen to deprecate some services to stop the problem escalating, which means that things like your libraries and scrobble counts will be unavailable for the time being.

All of your scrobbles and profile information is safe and undamaged, it’s just not displaying on the website right now.

We’re working hard to fix this, thanks again for your support and patience.

Everyone in any situation is bound to cross the unexpected. last fm doesn’t need to be giving out free subscriptions because the service level has decreased for a bit, it would be counter intuitive, the need the capital to improve the systems and keep last fm subscribers from experiencing drop-outs. we as supporters of the product need to realize that when shit happens, people need help. don’t kick’m when they’re down. If you make a little mistake at your job do they make you work the rest of the day for free? I’d sure hope not…

I would like sugest a feature to the scrobbler code. I repaired that in a lot of user’s libraries bands with short time musics is always in the of top listened artists. A user that scrobble an hour of led zeppelin and 40minutes of beatles probably will have the beatles on the top listened artist.
So why not count the real time that the user listened instead the number of tracks? I think that would be a much better measure to evaluate and follow the user’s taste.
